This second book our heroine grows up and once again experiences a tragedy that turns her world upside down! I won't miss the immature, rebellious, lying, secretive part of this character that caused many problems. She continues to blame Jax for everything because she can't face her role in it. Will they be able to get past their dislike and lack of trust and finally forge a bond? How will they survive let alone begin a rebellion of prophecy? The last part of this book contained so much growth and development in the story. Looking forward to reading the next book!Tags : The Beginning: The Legend of Oescienne (Book Two) - Kindle edition by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson. The Beginning The Legend of Oescienne Book Two edition by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson Children eBooks Reviews
Lately I have found myself going through a YA/Fantasy phase (ok, not lately, it's an ongoing thing for as long as I can remember), so when I stumbled on this book, despite the odd cover picture, I decided to give it and the other books in the series a try. I must say I am very pleased that I did.
I will not give any spoiler alerts or go into depth on what this book and the series is about, but I will urge any fans of YA fantasy fiction to add this to your reading list. I enjoyed it so much that I found the author herself on goodreads.com, followed her, and have had a few conversations with her about the books. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.
Happily the Legend of Oescienne continues. Once again the story is interesting, the world building remarkable and the characters are well defined. Our erstwhile heroine Jahrra continues to grow from childhood to young adulthood and her character begins to bloom. I'll be reading this again and passing it on to others. The "legend" is complex and there are many interesting characters. Some heartache and heartbreak and the usual frustrations of growing up with the school bullies and struggle to become an adult. Really a very good story.
Book 2, if anything, was better than book 1. The story of Jahrra's childhood continues. Once again, the author does not rush the story and gives us time to watch Jahrra grow up. Again we see her stumble her way through adolescence and her teen years. And typical of that age, doesn't always make the smartest decisions. But at the same time we see her slowly maturing into the hero she's going to be. Book 1 was definitely a "young adult" book. However this one has enough troubling and dark scenes that I'm not sure it's appropriate for young children. It certainly kept me up way past my bedtime (and I'm not young any more). I hope the author doesn't delay too long with book 3. I can't wait for the next chapter in the life of Jahrra and Oescienne to continue. I'm sure we'll be learning more about Jaax. And I really want to know more about Archedenaeh. Which side is she really on? Will she aid or hinder Jahrra? This book is definitely worth reading.
After reading the first book in the series I was pleased by the author's writing and the engaging characters that she has created. I made it a point to purchase this second book and I am glad that I did. This book continues with the story of Jahrra, the only human being remaining in a world populated by dragons, elves and a variety of other creatures. While Jahrra has matured greatly in this second book, so too has the writer's skill. While the first book in the series was well written, the evocative language in this book as well as the character development truly swept me into the world the author has created. I have read an uncountable number of books in my lifetime and I can honestly recommend this book as an example of some of the best writing out there. If you miss out on this book because it is not "commercial" like some others, you are missing out on a rich and inviting world to sink into. I cannot wait until the next book comes out!
As for what the book is about, I would probably still characterize it as "young adult" although I, as an adult, found it very interesting and not over-simplified as many YA books seem to be. Mainly, the character, Jahrra is in the young adult age range and many of her trials in this book involve coming-of-age. The fantasy in the book is there but melds subtly into the world rather than existing as a formulaic mash-up of predictable elements. My only real complaint is that I have to wait for the next book to find out more about characters I have grown to care about!
As other reviewers have stated, the first book in the series is not "action packed" but it does a really good job of introducing the characters and setting the stage for the rest of the series, which I immediately purchased and read back to back. I am a woman in my 50s and enjoy the YA paranormal books, but so many of them have too much teen age angst and drama that I can't really relate. Love fantasy, quests and dragons and it was fun to see Jaharra start to grow up and mature- and what a wonderful guardian - a dragon several hundred years old. I enjoyed the other characters too, several of which appear in the other books as well. The second two books in the series (The Beginning & The Awakening) and the short story collection Tales of Oescienne were great. I want more of Jaharra and Raejaaxorix - the sooner the better. I liked The Beginning even better than The Finding and couldn't wait for more of Jaharra and friends.
# 2 in the series " The Legend of Oscienne" . We have been introduced to a baby human girl growing up with Nesnan parents and then with a master dragon in the previous book.
Book # 2 show us her pre-teenage years and teenage years making indelible friendships with Raisi children, a sorceress, enemies in other Raisi children, and building up her strength and intelligence thanks to a very strict training in the art of defense/attack and the world of the old language of dragons.
It is not difficult to get engrossed in the story, just requires reading it one page at a time, and living through a world of magic opening up...
Fresh read, easy to identify to and love characters, building up of excitement and jubilation event after event.
At the end of this book, Jarrhaa loses her precious guardian dragon, discovers her true identity and her destiny to save the world from an old tyranny, and leaves her childhood behind by going into hiding with the "young" centenarian dragon Raejaarxorix.
