Wow this book is full of information not only about Kick but about the workings of the English government during World War II, including Winston Churchill and a lot of people I hadn't known before I read this book. It also gave me a new look at the relationship between Kick and her parents. I hadn't realized that Kick knew her husband several years before they were finally married, of course without her parents' consent, and they were only married a few short months before his untimely death. A very interesting and informative look at someone who has always been a shadowy figure in the history of the Kennedy family.

I recently read Paula Byrne's bio of Kick and thought it very good. I started this one and I thought, well one should read both books because while they are about the same person, the treatment in each is quite different. In Ms Byrne book, we are given a board Kennedy history and over view . In Barbara Leaming's bio, it begins when Kick arrives in England in 1938...it hits the ground running so to speak. Both are good and I think one would benefit from reading both, however I have to give the nod to Barbara Leaming 's book . She explains the post Billy era of Kick's life the best imo. I don't remember reading in Byrne's that there was century-old rivalry between Billy's family and the landed family of the man Kick wanted to marry later.( Fitzwilliam ) It's like you were married to a Hatfield, then you want to marry a McCcoy. This explains why her long time Billy friends were so horrified, besides the fact Peter Fitzwilliam was a womanizing rake. To go over the other side so thoroughly was disloyal. But apparently Kick found a great deal of joy in Peter's arms and had to be with him. Peter was the opposite of Billy, which may explain part of his allure for Kick. He would not bring back painful memories and certainly knew what he was doing in bed. Kick was loved by many men, but they may have seemed like boys next to Peter .

Ms.Leaming also relates how the Kennedys did nothing, literally nothing, about bringing Kick's body back to the US...Old Joe identified her, since he was there ( and the disgusting old goat made a pass on Billy's young sister at the funeral ) ...but that was it. Old Joe thought Jack was making arrangements , but there was just silence coming from America.I rather think Rose forbade Kick's return. It was as if Kick joined her sister Rosemary in the "children we don't talk" about club . Finally Billy's family had to step in to bury the poor woman and really Kick belonged to them more than the Kennedys at that point since," Kennedys don't cry" ...and Kick certainly did after Billy died. Excellent book
Barbara Leaming has done it again! If you've been a Leaming fan (count me in) you'll already know many of the cast of characters from her Jack Kennedy book as well as her prize winning "Churchill Defiant". For me that made the heretofore untold story of Kick Kennedy more compelling although newcomers cannot fail to drawn to this vibrant, enchanting young woman that takes London by storm at 18! It would be hard to find a decade with more historical significance than 1938 through 1948, the period in which the story takes place, and no one knows it better or has written of it with more intelligence and insight than this author. What raises the story to a higher level is how Leaming so deftly weaves Kick's story into the momentous events of those times. Do yourself a big favor and buy this book. Ms. Leaming is a born storyteller and when the inevitable TV and radio interviews start airing do yourself a treat and watch/listen. You'll be thanking me! I cannot wait to see what subject Ms. Leaming tackles next. What I do know is that I can hardly wait. Final thought......her author's Facebook site is superb. Follow her there.
On its own merit, this is an interesting read — in the event you're obsessed with British aristocratic cousinhood. But it is unacceptable to latch onto the Kennedy name to sell whatever else you wish to write about. Readers will pick up this book on account of the Kennedy sister, who barely has a supporting role in her own biography. For those draw to this because of an interest in the Kennedy family, don't bother. What's more (as many reviews here pointed out) this cannot be considered a biography when the first 18 years of the protagonist's life are never touched upon. That's especially bad considering Kick Kennedy only lived to be 26! I find it quite interesting, however, how effective it still is to use the Kennedy name to sell books today, more than half a century after JFK's death. This year alone, four new biographies were published about lesser known Kennedy sisters (two each about Rosemary and Kick), and I see that Jean, the youngest sister, is writing a biography to be released soon. This insatiable interest in the Kennedys says a lot more about the family than anything Leamer writes about in this book. So much is missing here about Kick's life and relationship with her own siblings and family, that this books fails monumentally as a biography. And the contempt with which she treats the Kennedys as a whole is appalling. An example out of the clear blue the author mentions that in 1946 JFK became gravely ill and given last rites. This jaw-dropping sentence is buried in the middle of a paragraph and never followed up on again! How exactly did Jack Kennedy get to live another 17 years, become president of the United States, and die by assassination, not illness? You won't find out in this book. Kick Kennedy also comes with no photos, which is unusual for a (presumed) biography. I really shouldn't have to google people to know what they even looked like. The best part of this book has to do with the insights into a world in transition England at the time of WWII (pre- and post-war), although even that is written entirely from the perspective of the uppermost crust of British society. In terms of writing style, I found it rather cumbersome. The narrative itself is good, but some sentences run for nearly a page with endless subclauses that made my head spin. But my main complaint has to do with the very little insight it offers into Kick Kennedy in her own right as opposed to her relationship to endless British artistorcrats I could never keep straight or really care less about.
